During a person’s twice per year cleaning they might be used to the cleaning that a dental hygienist does to keep their teeth cleaned. Even with the best oral health routine, or if it has been a while since someone had a dental cleaning, there may be an additional step that needs to be taken.
This step is called scaling and root planning and is completed by a periodontist. Although the procedure sounds scary, with the right planning and information it is a very common procedure and will help a person's oral health immensely. However, if people keep a good oral health routine they can avoid needing this type of cleaning procedure.
What is scaling and root planning?
Scaling and root planning is completed when there is a substantial amount of plaque and tartar buildup on a person's teeth and gums. There could also be the first signs of gum disease present, but with the right treatment it can be avoided.
Having the scaling and root planning procedure completed is also referred to as a “deep cleaning” of the teeth and gums. It is extremely beneficial for getting teeth and gum health back to a good place.
Having a deep cleaning done will eradicate the plaque and tarter and get the teeth back to the condition where they will only require a twice per year cleaning.
How is the deep cleaning procedure done?
Scaling and root planning are both completed typically over one or two visits. To minimize any discomfort, local anesthesia is typically used and will make the procedure painless for the patient.
After the procedure, there will be some at home instructions for the aftercare and it is important to keep in contact with your dentist if you notice any bad pain or bleeding. However, this is rarely the case.
How can I avoid needing to have scaling and root planning?
The best thing anyone can do is to always follow a good at home dental care routine including brushing their teeth twice a day, and flossing. Periodontal disease can sneak up on someone fast, of course, but having the right routine in place can avoid needing a deep cleaning.
Another thing that someone can add to their oral health routine that can be beneficial is the use of mouthwash. Either both in the morning or morning and night, using mouthwash is a great way to rid the teeth and gums of any bacteria. This can also help avoid needing a deep cleaning.
