Do I Really Need Gum Surgery?

Posted on: March 16, 2018

GumGum surgery may be necessary for anyone who is suffering from gum disease. This is a common and very serious condition. In fact, most adults will suffer from some form of gingivitis during their lifetime. The severity of the condition will determine what steps one can take to alleviate it.

If the gingivitis is minor in nature, it may be possible to heal the gums by simply performing a cleaning. If the gum disease is left untreated, it may be necessary to schedule surgery. This is why it is important to visit a dentist at the first sign of a problem and seek treatment right away.

Why surgery is necessary

Some patients need to have surgery in order to recover because of how severe the gum disease has become. A general dentist will typically make a recommendation to have surgery after completing a thorough examination. Very often, surgery is the only way to restore health because the gums have begun to recede and pull away from the tooth structure.

When they do this, the gums can appear elongated. Sometimes, the base of the tooth and roots will become exposed, creating an increased likelihood of developing a serious infection. Additionally, some patients will develop pockets in the gum tissue, creating the need for surgery to restore the health and appearance of the gums.

The risk of not treating gum disease

Few patients are excited upon hearing that they need to have surgery. However, there are serious risks involved with not taking the appropriate treatment steps. Many adults that suffer from tooth loss do so because they had untreated gum disease. Many people with gum disease end up suffering from loose teeth as more of the tooth structure is exposed.

This is something that should be avoided whenever possible because it is both expensive and terribly inconvenient to suffer from adult tooth loss. Therefore, even though surgery can be time-consuming, it is absolutely necessary for preventing more serious problems.

Options with gum surgery

The goal of gum surgery is to restore the size, shape and health of the gums. This can involve suturing real or synthetic tissue to the gums and re-securing them back around the teeth. In some cases, lasers may also be used to regenerate gum growth. It will be necessary to discuss all available options with a specialist, such as ourselves.

We provide patients with a variety of solutions for improving their health and restoring the gum tissue. This is not a procedure that is typically performed by a general dentist so if gum surgery is necessary, it is wise to visit our office right away.

Schedule a consultation

When visiting us for a consultation, we will take the time to complete a thorough examination and determine if gum surgery is actually necessary. If we recommend this procedure, we will discuss the methods we have available for completing it, what to expect from the surgery and recovery and will also answer any questions in detail.
