Dental bone grafting for replacing missing teeth

Understanding more about dental bone grafting procedures is a great idea, as this allows you to know exactly what to expect from the procedure. This procedure is a popular one among dental patients who want to replace any of their missing teeth with dental implants. Because dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone, it is essential for patients to have a sufficient amount of jawbone in order to properly support the implant. If they do not, then they may need to undergo a bone grafting procedure.

How does the bone grafting procedure work?

Lost bone tissue can be replaced in dental patients who are lacking a sufficient amount of jawbone. There are four bone material choices — the bone can come from the patient, from another human, from an animal or it can be made using synthetic materials. A material choice, as well as the type of anesthesia, needs to be made before the day of the procedure. The actual procedure requires the dental professional to make a small incision in the gums in order to place the chosen bone material into the lacking area. Stitches keep the incision closed and the material will be anchored to the jawbone to keep it in place.

Is bone grafting a painful procedure?

Those who undergo a dental bone graft will experience some discomfort and/or pain after the procedure, which is to be expected. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever can help minimize any discomfort or pain, especially over the first three to four days. For those who are more sensitive, they can discuss pain management options with their dental professional.

Is bone grafting a long procedure?

Bone grafting procedures tend to take somewhere between 20 minutes and 90 minutes to complete. It will depend on the location of the graft, how much bone needs to be grafted and whether or not any other necessary dental procedures need to be done first, like tooth extractions. Simple bone grafts can take only 20 to 45 minutes to perform and complex bone grafts can take 45 to 90 minutes to perform.
